VCF Demystified, Part 1: Understanding VMware Cloud Foundation 9

A practical map of VMware Cloud Foundation 9: its core components, operating model, and why a VCF fleet is more than a collection of vCenters.

VMware Cloud Foundation 9 is not simply a bundle of vSphere, vSAN, and NSX. It is a private-cloud operating model that brings compute, storage, networking, operations, and automation under one lifecycle and management experience.

Broadcom’s VCF 9 component list includes VCF Installer, VCF Operations, VCF Automation, vCenter, ESX, vSAN, NSX, and associated operations services such as logs and networks. They are related, but each has a distinct job.

The operating-model shift

In a traditional estate, a team may operate vCenters, storage clusters, NSX managers, monitoring, and automation as adjacent products. In VCF 9, the goal is a managed fleet: the collection of infrastructure and management components that together form the private-cloud platform.

The important question changes from “is this vCenter healthy?” to “is this fleet consistent, secure, upgradeable, and ready to deliver capacity?”

VCF does not remove the need for infrastructure skills. It changes where those skills matter most: less time on one-off component configuration, more time on architecture, policy, capacity, reliability, and service design.
